Open Door Sports is a small nonprofit making a big impact in the lives of children and young adults with disabilities. We offer free, adapted sports programs that provide inclusive athletic opportunities that these individuals would otherwise never have.
Since launching with soccer in 2017, our programming has grown to encompass basketball, bocce, pickleball, golf, tennis, yoga, T-ball, and flag football. All programs are held in Montgomery County, with the majority taking place right after school — bringing sports directly to the children while giving parents a valuable hour of respite, knowing their child is in a safe, fun, and inclusive environment.
Our participants are paired with neurotypical middle and high school volunteers who serve as peer buddies. These partnerships go far beyond the playing field: they forge genuine bonds, broaden the worldview of the volunteers, and foster deeper understanding and empathy across the broader community.
With just one full-time employee, Open Door Sports serves over 700 children and young adults with disabilities each year through more than 70 programs — a testament to the power of community, volunteerism, and sport to transform lives.
