The Bernie Scholarship Awards Program began in 1995 when Bernie Tetreault retired after 24 years as Executive Director Of Montgomery County’s public housing agency, Housing Opportunities Commission. The mission of the program is to provide financial support to graduating high school students and others who are very low-income & reside in subsidized housing in Montgomery County. Scholarship awardees may use the award funds for tuition & fees, books, transportation, child care & other course-related expenses. Awardees, 63 in 2018 & more expected in 2019 & future years, may be eligible Dreamers, single parents, & others who have a 2.0 GPA or higher, & may re-apply for multiple years until completion of their college degree or vocational certificate. The program is a 501(c)3 component fund of Greater Washington Community Foundation. See the website www.berniescholarships.org. WWC’s donation will be used for 2019 scholarships of $1,500 each.
